The Catalan Pyrenees rise majestically to the peaks of Canigou (2785m) and Carlit (2921m). With its varied landscapes, the mountain range appeals to climbers, skiers, walkers and anyone who enjoys nature in its wild and untouched state. From Canigou, you will get a unique panoramic view over the mountains and the Mediterranean.
The region has an exceptionally sunny climate, which means you can enjoy the mountains all year round. In winter, many mountain resorts offer downhill and cross-country skiing, and snow-boarding. For a change of pace, you can go snow-shoeing or dog sledging. Summer brings the scents and colours of nature and as you walk, you’ll see plants and trees from many climates.
This region is a haven for wildlife including wolves, long horned sheep, lizards and ibex. Sadly, there are no longer any bears in the mountains. For excitement, the fast-flowing mountain waters are great for kayaking and white water rafting, and for relaxation there’s nothing to beat the natural hot springs, where you can soak your cares away in outdoor thermal baths at temperatures near 35 degrees Centigrade. The landscape is dotted with picture-postcard villages. They cling to the sides of gorges beside cascading streams, with their houses clustered around Romanesque churches.
